GOLIAD - Marian Catherine Lankford passed away on the morning of Thursday, October 11, 2012, with her beloved daughter Anna at her bedside holding her hand. Marian was born Marian Walsh in Lethbridge Alberta, Canada on November 30, 1917.
She lived most of her early life in Portland Oregon where she attended a vocational school preparing her for her role as an Administrative Assistant until she joined the Women's Army Air Corp. in August 1943. She spent her time in the European campaign stationed in Italy working with Eisenhower's administrative staff as a sergeant monitoring the departing bombers and reporting the the planes not returning. This was the only aspect of her position that truly touched her. She was very proud to be one of the first W.A.C.s serving our country, and was very proud to have her name and picture featured on the new Monument honoring the W.A.C.s in Washington D.C. She married Edgar Allen Lankford in May of 1951, and had three children, Charles, George, and Anna Lankford.
Marian was a fiercely independent soul, preferring to keep to herself just out of the city limits of Goliad, Texas. She counted among her close friends Florine Davis, Gladys Hilbrich, and Woody Johnson, all residents of Goliad. She advocated the advent of health foods long before it was in vogue, baking her own whole-wheat bread, culturing her own yogurt while she was living on a small farm in Rupert, Idaho until settling in Goliad in 1964 to work for the Goliad Primary school until she retired. She spent her remaining years working with the Presbyterian church and sharing her gardening skills with the support of her son George.
Marian embodied the noble attributes of unconditional love and lead-by-example, serving as a role model for all that were fortunate to know her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Anna Walsh of Bellingham, Washington; husband Edgar A. Lankford, of Goliad; and brothers Leo Walsh, Tom Walsh and Francis Walsh.
She is survived by her sister Helen G. Walsh of Bellingham, Washington; daughter, Anna Lankford Buckley and husband John of Friendswood, Texas; sons, Charles E. Lankford of Goliad and George A. Lankford and wife Lynda of Houston; granddaughter, Angela Ussery Bradley and husband Shane of Houston; niece, Gerri Heistand and husband Tom; sister in-law, Marguerite Walsh; and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be held at the Goliad Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2012. Anyone that may wish to make any donations on her behalf should forward them to the Goliad Presbyterian Church, one of her last wishes.
