Col Robert Haden Abercrombie Sr was born on 11 September 1838 in Cross Keys, Alabama, to Milo Bolling Abercrombie and his wife Sarah Lee Haden. He graduated with a law degree from Cumberland University in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Robert married Frances Rebecca "Fannie" Gary on 11 January 1860.
