Bert George Hadfield was born in Illinois, probably Sangamon Township in Piatt County, on July 21, 1881. He was the fifth of twelve children of Thomas P. and Barbara Catherine Prough Hadfield. The family later moved to De Witt County, Illinois.
Bert's youngest daughter wrote of her father, "My Dad had farms in both Illinois and Indiana. He lost his money in the Depression. Then he became a freight conductor on the Southern Railroad, originally out of Sinclair [St. Clair?] County - so maybe some of his family was there, but my siblings remember only Farmersburg [Sullivan County, Indiana]. Dad's run early-on was to Huntingburg, Indiana, where he met mother, Isabel Matilda Manetta Wagner...."
Bert and Isabel married in Evansville, Indiana, on June 19, 1910. They were parents of seven children: the six linked below, plus a son who is living.
