Daniel was a clown! He was also a competitor with compassion. At age six, he was on the El Dorado Arkansas Swim Team. When his times fell off, his father suspected it was from empathy for his teammates. The real reason was more serious -- brain cancer. So, Daniel went from competing against the clock, to competing for his life.
The black hat became his trademark. Hairless most of the time, he was granted a wish to attend Broadway's Phantom of the Opera - including a backstage tour and visit to the Phantom's dressing room.
So many friends traveled from so many cities to pay their last respects, because so many wanted to recognize his spirit of love and giving, traits he was known for even as he knowingly lost his life to meduloblastoma brain cancer.
Odyssey of the Mind has a regional memorial in his name - the Daniel Baston Award for Selfless Dedication - and Arkansas hospitals have a grieving series featuring his family after his death. The youngster had major treatments in Dallas, New York and Duke University during three brave years of his failed battle to live. Most of his many friends from El Dorado Arkansas came to his funeral and burial in Dallas, joining many nurses and doctors who came primarily from Texas Children's Hospital.
Most who remember him will agree that his greatest gift to this world was his inspiring positive attitude and his smile. Daniel never regretted his fate. Instead, he was concerned for those around him, whether stranger, nurse, doctor, friend, or family, even to the end.
Specifying his epitaph, he said, "RIP. No words, just the letters, no periods. Don't forget." We didn't forget, Daniel - oops, we included the periods! We'll never forget you, though. What a person you were!
Daniel was the oldest son of Ben Baston, who himself was the oldest son of the late Lloyd Chesney Baston of El Dorado AR. Daniel's mother is Cynthia Reyna. Survivors also include grandmother Billie Jean Baston, step-sister Heather Baston Anderson, sister Laurel Baston, brother Michael Baston, and grandparents Sostenez and Emilia Reyna.
Your modest contribution in Daniel Baston's memory to Make a Wish Foundation would be appreciated.
