William the son of Warren B. and Gwendolyn Reel of Carlock IL enlisted in the US Marines on November 18, 1965 in Chicago IL. He arrived in Vietnam and was assigned to Company L, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF. On August 20, while on patrol a (BT) booby trap was detonated resulting in PFC Reel being wounded, he was treated at the Battalion aid station and returned to duty.
Company L, had set up a Fire Team ambush on the outskirts of Tan Hy near the Tra Bong River in Binh Son District, but were discovered by the enemy who opened fire on the Marines. A call for assistance went out and a reaction squad was sent to join in the fire fight. During the confrontation with the enemy a Marine was wounded and PFC Reel was killed in action as a result of enemy rifle fire.
