Nathaniel was the son of Conrad and Mary Magdalena Snyder (Schneider) Enders. During the Civil War, he enlisted at age 15 in Co. A, 3rd Battalion, 15th U. S. Infantry. On Dec. 14, 1863, he was transferred to Co. F, 2nd Battalion, 15th U. S. Infantry. He was wounded in the right foot by an artillery shell at the Battle of Jonesboro, Georgia on Sept. 1, 1864. After the war, he was a farmer and married Mary J. Keiter. The couple had 11 children.
