US Congressman. A great-grandson of Carter Braxton (member of Continental Congress, signer of Declaration of Independence). He attended the common schools, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He practiced in Richmond, Va. during the 1850s, and in Fredericksburg, Va. 1860-1861. He was also a member of the Virginia State Legislature as State Senator during 1852-56. When the War Between The States broke out, Braxton organized Company I of the 30th Virginia Infantry and was elected its Captain on July 18, 1861. He was re-elected Captain on April 16, 1862. He was promoted to Major and served as quartermaster of Walker's Brigade (later Cooke's) from August 10, 1862 until the end of the war. He was elected a member of the common council of Fredericksburg in 1866. A few years later he became a United States Congressman, Democrat, being elected to represent Virginia's 7th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. Failing in reelection in 1872 to the Forty-third Congress, he resumed the practice of law in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
