When the War Between The States broke out, Braxton organized Company I of the 30th Virginia Infantry and was elected its Captain on July 18, 1861. He was re-elected Captain on April 16, 1862. He was promoted to Major and served as quartermaster of Walker's Brigade (later Cooke's) from August 10, 1862 until the end of the war.
