Charles served as a private with the 11th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Company H (Civil War). He was wounded at Antietam, Maryland, on September 17, 1862, and died of those wounds at the Camp Curtin Hospital, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The surname Newmiller and Neumuller has also been found on records.
