British Writer, Editor. Known for his liberal views and his writings directed toward these ideals. He also wrote political pamphlets including one for the repeal of the Corn Laws. In 1829 he became part proprietor and editor of Athenaeum magazine, the influence of which he greatly extended. In 1846 he resigned the editorship, and assumed that of the Daily News after the resigning of its founder, Charles Dickens. He left The Daily News in 1849 and for the rest of his life he concentrated on writing books and articles on literature. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
