Graduated in Architecture at the University of Sydney. In 1964, Hughes left Australia to go to Europe where he worked as a correspondent, first in Rome and then in London, for several major newspapers and magazines. In 1970, he moved to New York where he managed to emerge as a authoritative art critic, and in the years after 1990 as a television writer. During his multi-year career in the United States he has received several prestigious awards. He wrote and published numerous books that have become very popular among the public, including "Barcelona, the great enchantress", "The Shock of the New", "American Visions: The Epic History of Art in America", "The Art of Australia", "Culture of Complaint", "Rome: A Cultural, Visual and Personal History" and "Goya ".
