Legendary French alpinist. Known for having been the first man to climb a Himalayan peak higher than the 8000 meters. On 3 June 1950, he was the expedition leader of a team of professional climbers when, after a series of attempts in extreme weather conditions, reached the summit of Annapurna in the Himalayas. To commemorate this epic adventure he wrote and published three books become best sellers of mountain literature. Graduated at the Ecole des hautes etudes commerciales, Maurice Herzog was also a politician and has held prestigious positions, including Minister of Sport French, Mayor of Chamonix as well as having been a member of the Comité International Olympique. He died because of natural causes at his home near Paris. (bio by: Lucy Caldarelli)
