Charles Lureman Enlisted at 18
Serving North Till Finish
of War.


Came from Germany at 11, Settling in
Pendleton, Later Locating in North
Tonawanda-Held Numerous Public

Charles Lureman 78, died last night
at his home, 162 Keil street. Mr.
Lureman was a Civil War veteran.
As a member of the Union Army he
served from the opening of the war
until the end, being wounded twice
during different engagements. He)
recovered and took up arms again for
the North.
He enlisted in the twenty-eighth
infantry at Buffalo in May, 1861, and
was attached to company A of that
organization. At the end of his enlistment
in the twenty-eighth infantry
he re-enlisted in the Union army
and was assigned to duty with company
A, second New York Mounted
He served with this regiment until
honorably discharged from service,
Aug. 1(3). 1865. Mr. Lureman was
shot through the left arm the first
time he was wounded. His second
wound was inflicted by a bullet in
his knee.
During the eight years Mr. Lureman
resided in North Tonawanda he was
a member of L. S. Payne Post, G. A.
R. At the time'of his death he was
t r e a s u r e r of the post.
Mr. Lureman was born in Germany
and came to America at the age of
11. At the age of 18 he took up his
residence in the town of Pendleton,
east of the Tonawandas, and soon
after enlisted. After the war he became
prominent in public school life
of the town. He served as highway
commissioner, assessor, school trustee
and in other capacities as a town
officer. Politically, he was a Republican.
Eight years ago he retired
and took up his residence in North
Surviving are a son. Charles J.
Lureman of Wendellville; three
daughters. Mrs. Bert Bush of Wendelville.
Mrs. Russell Bush and Mrs.
Otto Ericsson of North Tonawanda,
four grandchildren and one great
Funeral services will be held
Sunday a 2:10 p. m. from the late
Rev. E. A. Schultz of Frieden's
church officiating. Burial will
take place at the Bear Ridge Cemetery.
