Christine Elizabeth Richman went home to be with the Lord after a full and adventurous life on August 1, 2005, in Eugene, Oregon.
Christine Mertens was the first of two children born to Edwin and Margaret Mertens in Robstown, Texas. She grew up in Kingsville, Texas, with her sister Virginia. Her childhood was full of exciting times with her cousins and fishing out on the water with her father. When Christine was still young, her father was transferred to Eugene, Oregon, by Southern Pacific Railroad. Though she continued to visit Texas, it was Oregon that remained her permanent home.
Christine worked at Newberry's throughout her high school years as well as at a grocery store. The summer of her junior year, a friend set her up on a date with Gil Richman. They dated, and after a short courtship, married in Vancouver, Washington on October 5, 1945. They continued to live in Eugene, where all four of their children graduated from Willamette High School.
In 1972, Christine got a paper route job with the Register Guard. The route provided many memories for Gil, Christine, and their grandchildren. At any given time, the Richmans were usually hauling around papers and at least one grandkid. Christine drove the route on her own until Gil retired from E.W.E.B. in 1985. And so, side by side, Gil and Christine would drive all over Western Oregon delivering papers. They had many wonderful times together as they not only explored Oregon, but also traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Illinois and Yellowstone Park.
Since Gil passed away in 1995, Christine continued to create memories with her family. From landscaping her backyard, to driving Highway 101, to trying out a new restaurant, to the annual family reunion before Labor Day, Christine loved to be with her family and get hugs from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was never too busy to talk to, and had an infectious laugh that delighted those around her.
Those times in her backyard were the most wonderful of all, and Labor Day gatherings won't ever be quite the same without her. We will all deeply miss that Texas girl with the bright eyes and big smile.
She is survived by her two sons: Gilbert, Jr. "Sonny" and Steven of Eugene; two daughters: Cheryl (Milon Whittier) of Lyons and Sharon (Charles Staley) of Vancouver, Washington; sister, Virginia McIntyre of Eugene; five grandchildren: Nikkia Richman; Kevin and Connie (Rolfe) Whittier; Jason and Nathan Staley; three great-grandchildren: Justin Whittier; Eli Rolfe; Sydney Staley.
A graveside memorial service was held August 4, 2005, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Eugene, Oregon, where Christine was buried beside her beloved husband, Gil Richman.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Comfort Care Center at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eugene, Oregon.
