Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born William George Hawtrey Bankes in Dorset, England, he served as a Cornet Officer in the 7th Hussars, The Queen's Own, British Army. On March 19, 1858, near Lucknow, India, Cornet Bankes led three charges against a body of rebels at Moosa Bagh. With his men, he rushed the enemy guns and in the course of these charges the young officer was almost cut to pieces. He died of his wounds 18 days later at age 21. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria on December 24, 1858.
