He married Verna Poetter/Patten in Rockford, IL, in 1930. They were divorced in 1933 due to his domestic violence (assault and battery)facilitated by his alcoholism. He spent time in the Dodge County, WI, jail for this offense.
He was a union painter by trade and worked in Sioux City, Woodbury, IA, where he was killed in an accident at the age of 42.
His residences over the years were in Juneau, Milwaukee, Watertown,WI; and Sioux City, IA.
