♥ ♥ ~ My Grand Aunt Julia ~ ♥ ♥
Julia was the seventh of nine children. She contracted polio at a young age and had to wear braces on her legs and walk with canes the rest of her life.
She married Stephen Augustine in 1929 and they raised one son, Danny. She enjoyed crocheting, picking wild berries, and growing most of her own vegetables in her large garden. She also raised chickens and rabbits, so she always had fresh eggs and meat. She taught my Mom how to can vegetables and make jelly and jam.
One of my favorite childhood memories is when Aunt Julia came to stay with us for a few weeks one Fall and taught my Mom to make applesauce. After Aunt Julia returned home, Mom made some applesauce on her own and couldn't understand why her batch had a pink color. Aunt Julia had to remind Mom that she should peel the apples first.
