Madeline Fleshman Beamer, 92, of Wytheville, Va., died Monday, August 9, 2010, at the Wythe County Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Elijah Willis and Pearl Wilson Fleshman. She is preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Pillow of Roanoke, Va., and brothers, Carter W. Fleshman of Wise, Va. and James W. Fleshman of Sun City West, Ariz. Madeline graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem and Farmville State Teacher's College (now Longwood University). She also attended Duke University. Before marriage, she taught primary grades in several different schools in Rockbridge and Botetourt counties and in the cities of Hampton and Roanoke. While raising her children, she would sometimes substitute teach in the Wythe County schools. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she spent many years as a member of the Altar Guild. An avid reader, seamstress and artist, she enjoyed playing bridge regularly with close friends in two different local clubs. Also, she was a longtime member of the Wilderness Road Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her loving husband of almost 67 years, Carter Wilson Beamer, of Wytheville, Va.; daughter, Beryl Scott and husband, Timothy Rankin, of Richmond, Va.; son, Dr. Wilson Carter Beamer and wife, Lynn, of Knoxville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Shane Patrick Rankin, Zachary Gardner Beamer, and Spencer Wilson Beamer; sisters-in-law, Charlotte C. Beamer, of Blacksburg, Va., Alice Fleshman, of Sun City West, Ariz. and June Kiser Pyrah, of Salem, Va. Many nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 275 East Main Street in Wytheville on Friday, August 13, 2010, at 2 p.m. with Father Kent Tarpley officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Woodlawn, Va. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church. The family would like to especially thank the nursing staff at Wythe County Community Hospital for their many acts of kindness and loving care. Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, Va. is in charge of arrangements.
