Charles Chard and wife, Sarah Ann Willett Chard, came to Kansas in 1877, from Indiana. Charles was born in 1807, was ANglo-French. the settled 3 miles and 1/2 mile north of now Stark on a plot which later became Chard City.
Chard Sity was established in 1878. consisting of 2 stores, post office, Broom factory and a blacksmiths shop. They had eleven children, six of whom died in infancy.

Charles sold the Chard City land to Edith Crees in 1879.
