Opal I. McDowell Ball, 86, New Meadows, died Monday, Dec. 11, 1995 at a Council hospital. Graveside services to celebrate the joyful entrance of Opal Irene McDowell Ball into the realm of our Heavenly Father will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 14, 1995, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weiser. Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home, Weiser.
Opal was born February 9, 1909, at Emmett, Idaho, the daughter of John M. and Cecily B. Burnham Callahan. She moved to Weiser as a child and graduated from Weiser High School. Her marriage to Ralph D. McDowell took her to several logging camps in the Long Valley area, settling in New Meadows where she lived until ill health caused her to move to the Council Care Center. [Opal was married to Ralph D. McDowell on July 6, 1929 in Star, Ada County, Idaho.] Opal will be remembered for her beautiful handiwork, Christmas popcorn cake she lovingly made for not only her grandchildren but for the little people in the neighborhood who many times called her "grandma."
Survivors include her children Janell and Alex Sonnier of Lafayette, La.; Ellen and Eldon Carpenter of New Meadows, Idaho; Della ross and Harold Ball of Wallowa, Ore.; a sister, Nellie Van Natta, Pocatello, Idaho; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Ralph D. McDowell and Celsus R. Ball, one grandchild, one niece and one nephew.
