'Col' Sam T. Suit was a landowner and farmer in Southern Md. Suitland Md was named after his property. The U.S. Census Bureau website has an extensive article about much of his life; and since the early 1940s has had it headquarters on what was the main section of Mr. Suits former property. The 'Col' title was an honorary one given to him by the whiskey makers in Kentucky (known as bourbon locally) when he was living down there. The Industrial & Engineering Chemistry website has a page devoted to his distillery referring to him as 'the Suitland alchemist'. 'Col.' Suit was making in 1875 'standard whiskies for the drug trade', which were examined and approved by the Boards of Health of the District of Columbia and Washington City. Mr. Suit had tried to get into the railroad business as well when in May of 1881 he was elected to the Washington and Chesapeake R.R. company board as its treasurer. The line was never built; it was intended to run from D.C. to Fairhaven on the bay, then a new resort. One railroad he was involved in and that was built was the Washington and Pt. Lookout R.R. though it's unclear what involvement he had. (bio by: Fred Sanford)
