In 1950, he and his wife Tillie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; she survived him as well as their son James and a daughter & a sister each named Mabel. He also had 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Capt. James piloted and was the skipper of the 1st fire boat in the D.C. Fire Dept. - named 'Firefighter' - which he took on its first run. He had joined the DCFD in 1905 and later became captain of the boat, a job he kept until he retired in 1938, after 33 years of service. The boat and its crew once fought a fire along the waterfront for 72 hours straight. The 'Firefighter' was taken out of service and replaced in 1947. He was a captain on a liner and a crewman on a sailing freighter each out of Baltimore, Md. prior to joining the DCFD.
