OATIS ELLIS PENCE, age 73, died Monday, December 18, 2000, at his home following an extended illness surrounded by his family.
He was born January 29, 1927, the son of John Cleveland and Sarah Frances Frazee Pence, in Carter County, Kentucky. Oatis was one of thirteen children. The Cleveland Pence family moved from Carter County around 1930 to the small town of Quincy, which was located very near the Ohio River, Lewis County, Kentucky, about ten miles west of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Oatis served in the US Army during the end of World War II, he served with the 460th Anti-Craft Battalion. After his military service Oatis worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 10 years and the Dominion Electric Company for 3 years, retiring from General Motors in July of 1978, Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio.
For hobbies, Oatis enjoyed buying and trading guns and gun shows of any kind, he also enjoyed playing cards and attending garage sales.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Gladys Pearl Ervin Pence, whom he married on August 7, 1948, in Greenup County, Kentucky, he was the father of four daughters and sons-in-law, Judy C. and Randy Farst of Lucas, Ohio, Beverly A. and Gary Smith of Bellville, Ohio, Rita L. and Jim Cushing of Ontario, Ohio and Shelly D. and Ed Shambaugh of Mansfield, Ohio, six grandchildren, Tammy L. Dudley, Tracey L. Book. Jason and Jimmy Cushing, and Kristen A. and Katie A. Shambaugh, four great grandchildren, Tyler W. and Randi J. Book, Dylan Lee Dudley and Jasmine Cushing, three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Russell Pence of Maysville, Kentucky, Edward and Mildred Pence of Cincinnati, Ohio, and James and Laura Pence of Elyria, Ohio, one sister and brother-in-law, Josephine "Josie" and Jack Stephens of Aurora, Colorado, numerous nieces and nephews and will be missed by his many friends.
Oatis was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Joseph William "Willie" Pence of Vanceburg, Kentucky, Otis F. Pence of Mansfield, Ohio, Elbert and Rell Pence, sisters, Sarah Ann Pence Spaeth of Brooksville, Florida, Dorothy and Minnie Pence and Opal Pence Meltebrink of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Friends may call at the Diamond Street Home of the Wappner Funeral Home on Thursday, December 21, 2000, one hour prior to the service. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. conducted by the Rev. Dan Nichols. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to MedCentral/Mansfield Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Full Military Services were conducted by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail.
