Vanceburg, Kentucky - Lewis County recorded it's first traffic fatality of the year at 10:30 p.m. Saturday when JOHN CLEVELAND PENCE, 81, of Quincy, was struck and killed by a car while crossing the highway at Quincy.
The Kentucky State Police report that Pence got off of a church bus at Quincy at the intersection of Route 10 and Briary Road and walked in front of a westbound car driven by Mike Sellers of Vanceburg, and was killed instantly.
Pence, a native of Carter County, was a retired farmer.
Survivors include six sons, Willie and Russell, both of Maysville, Kentucky, Otis and Oatis of Mansfield, Ohio, Edward of Springfield, Ohio and James of Elyria, Ohio, two daughters, Josephine Stevens of Mansfield and Mrs. Harold Spaeth (Sarah) of Hollywood, Florida; a brother, Lewis Pence and a sister, Mrs. Julie Porter, both of Lucasville, Ohio. Several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m. at Methodist Church at Quincy, under the direction of Dickerson Funeral Home. Burial at Quincy Methodist Cemetery.
Frances and "Cleve," as he was known, moved from Carter County around 1930, after the death of Cleve's father in March of 1929. They settled in Quincy, a small town in Lewis County, just a short walking distance from the Ohio River. The only job that I have ever heard that my grandfather Cleve had was stripping tobacco. He could not read or write, but understood money very well. My grandpa Cleve did not drive a car, but walked everywhere he went, he said that he liked to walk, I believe it kept him slim and trim.
