Zelma Jeanne Hartley, 103, of Hamilton, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Marcus Daly Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Hamilton.
Zelma was born Feb. 25, 1905, in Hamilton, the daughter of Charles and Anna Hartley. She was raised and educated in Hamilton and graduated from Hamilton High School. She spent two years in Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., and two years at the University of Washington, where she received her bachelor of arts degree.
Zelma was the music supervisor in Mullan, Idaho, for two years. She married her high school sweetheart, Dr. J. Wilson Taylor in 1930. The couple divorced after eight years of marriage.
Zelma spent 20 years at the front desk of the famous Davenport Hotel in Spokane. She returned home to Hamilton, where she was involved in AAUW, PEO, Drama Club, Friends of the Library, Historical Society, Commodity Center and Order of Rainbow for Girls for over 20 years. Zelma had been a member of the Leona Chapter No. 31 OES since 1923. She taught piano for many years.
Miss [Ms.] Hartley was choir director of the United Methodist American Baptist Church for half a century. She lived in the family home, which her parents purchased in 1920 from Mr. and Mrs. M.A. White, the original owners.
Surviving include her sister, June Hartley Howe of Hamilton; niece, Jeanne and Oats Hargett of Hamilton; grandnephews, Bill Hargett of Barcelona, Spain, and Chris (Jeanne) Hargett of Washington, D.C.; great-grandnieces, Anna and Cleo Hargett, both of Washington, D.C.; and numerous cousins.
At Zelma's request, no public services will be held. Private urn placement will take place at Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton. Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.
The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor's choice.
