Utah's Oldest Man
Dies At Age 101
PROVO (Special) -- Carl Schemensky, Lake View, Utah County, who would have been 102 years old on Dec. 17, died Wednesday at 12:45 a.m. in the home of a son, Frank Schemensky, Lake View.
Born in Dearing, Germany, Dec. 17, 1850, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Schemensky, Sr. He received his education in Germany and became a florist in his native land. He married Pauline Schmidt in April, 1884, at Frankhausen, Germany, and brought his family to America July 4, 1885, settling first in Topeka, Kan., later moving to Omaha, Neb., and 1892 coming to Utah.
According to state records he was the second oldest person--and the oldest man--in the state of Utah.
His wife died April 24, 1922, and later he married Marie Huth Kelsch, May 21, 1924, in Provo. She died Feb. 28, 1938 [27 Feb. 1937].
Surviving are the sons; a daughter, Mrs. Elsie Poulsen, Orem; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. It is believed some of his brothers and sisters in Germany still are alive.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel by Rev. Edwin F. Irwin, pastor of the Provo Community Church.
Friends may call at the mortuary Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday prior to services. Burial will be in the Provo City Burial Park.
