Service of the 8th Iowa Infantry included the battle of Shiloh. The unit fought 10 hours in the infamous "Hornet's Nest" on the first day repelling attack after attack. It was the last to leave the advanced line. This gave Gen.Buell time to reinforce the rear lines and snatch victory from defeat. The 8th, entirely cut off, fought until they could fight no longer, out of ammunition, threw down their arms only to see many of their number shot down after they had surrendered.
