Henry served with the 1st Delaware Regiment, Company B during the Civil War.

He was captured at the battle of Gettysburg on July 2nd/3rd 1863 and from there was sent to Richmond, where he was confined from July 21st-25th.

Henry would be paroled at City Point, Virginia on August 6th and then reported to Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland on August 8th.

He would finally be sent back to his regiment on October 5th. Private McCraken would be captured a second time at Morton's Ford, Virginia on January 6th 1864 and then would be confined in Richmond on February 7th before being sent to Andersonville prison, where he would arrive on March 7th.

Henry was admitted to the hospital on June 4th and he "Died Of Disease" (dysentery) two days later while a POW during the war.
