Considered to be among the best racehorses of the 20th Century. Blood-Horse magazine ranked him fourth in the list of the top 100 US Thoroughbred Champions of the 1900s, behind Man O' War (1st), Secretariat (2nd), and Citation (3rd). He was the US Horse of the Year from 1960 to 1964 and inducted into the US Racing Hall of Fame in 1967. Born at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Kentucky, Kelso was owned by Allaire du Pont of the Bohemia Stables and trained by Dr. John Lee & Carl Hanford. He earned over $1 million dollars in his career, a record that stood for 13 years. He is the only five-time Horse of the Year in history.
