Howard E. Moon
MONTROSE - Howard E. Moon, age 95, a resident of the Montrose area since 1937, died Friday evening, Jan. 14, 2005, in the San Juan Living Center at Montrose.
Howard was born in Kenton, Okla., on Feb. 3, 1909, the son of Walter E. and Emma Pearl (Eaton) Moon. He spent his childhood in Oklahoma and Kansas, graduating from high school in Kansas.
On Sept. 19, 1930, Howard entered into marriage with Anna Maxine Wooten.
After high school, Howard worked in a bank in Kansas. In 1937 he moved his family to Montrose, Colo., and worked for the Co-op and as a farmer. They then moved into Montrose and Howard was employed with the Uncompahgre Water Users.
Howard and Maxine's marriage then ended in divorce and Howard moved to Denver to work. While working in Denver, he met his second wife, Dorothy Kelso. They were married on Dec. 31, 1953, in Denver. Dorothy preceded Howard in death on Nov. 5, 1998, in Montrose. Maxine is also deceased.
After he met Dorothy, they lived in Denver for about 10 years and then moved back to Montrose where Howard worked for a savings and loan company. When he was 60 years old, he left the company and began farming and raising hogs. He loved every minute of his new life.
Howard was the founder of the Lariat Saddle Club.
Howard loved riding his horses, being outdoors, and going on trail rides with the Lariat Saddle Club through the wilderness. He especially loved nature, his animals and his family. As Howard was loved in life, he will be profoundly missed in death.
Surviving family members who were honored to share Howard's life include two daughters: Mary Ellen Coffee, of Montrose, Colo.; Verna Cater, of Canon City, Colo.; six grandchildren: Roanna Griffin, of Houston, Texas; Mauri Dolan, of Montrose, Colo.; Adele Frangos, of Albuquerque, N.M.; Raonna Bish, of Grand Junction, Colo.; Vickie Butts, of Canon City, Colo.; Diana Globoker, of Spearfish, S.D.; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Gould, of Montrose, Colo.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, both of his wives, six brothers, three sisters, and one great-granddaughter, Danielle Dolan.
A funeral service in celebration of Howard's life will be officiated on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Crippin Funeral Home Chapel.
A graveside service will be conducted on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m. in the Olingers/Crown Hill Cemetery at Wheat Ridge, Colo.
