Thomas left England in 1717, settling on the Brandywine River near Downingtown, PA. He established a mill on the river and had a large family. The area was first known as Milltown, and later, Downing's Town. In the mid-1800s the name was clarified and today is known as Downingtown.
No marker exists in the cemetery for him. It is not certain if this is even the Quaker cemetery he was buried in; three other Quaker meetinghouse cemeteries are in the area.
Thomas Downing's father was also named Thomas Downing. Thomas Sr was a Basketmaker and at age 9, Thomas II became his father's apprentice in the Basket Making trade.
Thomas had eleven children. Richard and Joseph are the only two posted on Findagrave. The other nine were: Thomazine 1715-d.young; Thomas Jr., 1717-1736; John, 1720-1796; William, 1722-1788; Jane, 1723-1795, m. John Roberts; Sarah, 1725-1745, m. Joshua Baldwin; Thomazine, 1727-unk., m. Samuel Bond; Samuel, 1729-d. young; and the first Joseph, 1731-d. young. Joseph b. 1734 and listed in Findagrave was obviously named in honor of his brother.
