Samuel was a substantial farmer and a exsoldier who was of German descent.
In the fall of 1864 he enlisted in Co. G, 55th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland under Gen'l Thomas. He participated in the campaigns of Tennessee, Alabama and the battles of Columbus, Bridgeport, Franklin and Nashville.
During the first day of battle of Nashville a shell exploded near him and he suffered a concussion. During the second day a mini ball struck his hand. While in the hospital recovering from his hand injury, he came down with the measles. It settled in his lungs and became permanently disabled.
Honorably discharged during the fall of 1865. He became a dormant member of the Grand Army of the Republic.
Samuel married Mary Catherine Wilson in 1871, Clinton Co., Indiana.
Samuel and Mary had the following children:
1. Mark Mills Blystone (1871~1948) m Olive May Mechem
2. Hattie B. Blystone (1875) m Andrew Malicoat
Samuel and his family settled on a farm of 120 acres in the Michigan Township. He remained there until his death in 1912.
