Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Army of the Potomac and was commissioned Colonel of the 73rd New York Volunteer Infantry in September 1861. At the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg, he was in command of the brigade that included the 70th, 71st, 72nd, 73rd and 120th New York Infantries. On July 2, 1863, in support of the 1st Union Brigade, he placed his brigade in a field near Emmettsburg Road close to the first battle line of the Confederates. There he advanced his men, captured the colors of the 8th Florida Infantry, taking prisoners and recaptured artillery guns that had been left on the field. For his leadership and gallantry at Gettysburg, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on October 24, 1864. After the war, he held a post in the United States Internal Revenue Department until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
