Sgt Stephen L. Bryson
Birth: Jan. 8, 1966
Montgomery
Montgomery County
Alabama, USA
Death: Jan. 9, 2002, Pakistan

Marine Sgt Bryson was assigned to Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 352 (VMGR-352), the "Raiders," Combined Task Force 58, Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, California, as a flight engineer. Bryson was killed in the crash of a KC-130/R Hercules refueling aircraft. Stephen came from a military family and was born at Maxwell Air Force Base where his father was stationed. As a child growing up, all he ever wanted to do was be in the military and fly. After graduation, he joined the Marines and planned to make it his career. His fellow soldiers remember "Peabo"(his nickname) for his courage and good nature; he was always calm, cool and collected. Before going on dangerous missions in Afghanistan, Stephen would often say, "Let's go do our thing". Several weeks were all that he had left before returning home. Friends remember him as a grinning, Bible-carrying man. He had a knack for walking in the room and feeling the stress and the tension. He would say something off the wall, and when he turned around and left the room he left everyone smiling. Stephen's mother said she supports the nation's fight against terrorism, despite her personal grief. "The United States is doing the right thing," said Deloris Bryson, "but I was not prepared to sacrifice my only child". (bio by: Brenda N)
