Cpl. Philip A. Johnson of Mobile, Alabama was a committed military man who jumped to the Army after he left the Marines. The helicopter pilot attended the University of South Alabama in Mobile for three years before joining the Marines. After four years in the Marines, he served in the Army for six years. He was doing what he wanted to do, and he felt he was doing the right thing. Johnson grew up in Chicago before his family moved to Mobile in 1985. He was among nine soldiers killed in a Black Hawk crash in Iraq. His wife, Melissa, is in the Air Force and lived in Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Sgt. Melissa Johnson, his parents, Philip and Barbara Johnson, two brothers, Matthew and Peter, maternal grandparents, James and Marion Greulich. He was 31.
