Spc. Paul J. Bueche joined the National Guard four days before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and served in Kuwait and Iraq. But it was his youthful energy that loved ones remember best.
"He was a grand old kid, fun-loving and mischievous," the Rev. Tim Deasy said of the young man who attended his church and parish elementary school.
Bueche, 19, of Daphne, Ala., was killed Oct. 21, 2003, in Balad, Iraq, when a helicopter tire he was working on exploded. He was in the 131st Aviation Regiment based in Birmingham, Ala.
"He lived more in 19 years than many of us live in a lifetime," Deasy said.
"Paul strongly believed in what he was doing, serving in the National Guard to assist the people of the state of Alabama and to keep America safe and strong," his family said in a prepared statement.
He is survived by his parents, Paul and Marie, and older sisters Jessica and Melissa.
