Leonard G. Carman, 61, of 39 Suttonmill Road, Upper Deerfield Township died in Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, on Thursday afternoon after a brief illness. He had been in poor health since May and was a patient in Bridgeton Hospital before being transferred to Philadelphia a week ago.

Husband of Shirley Hiles Carman, who he married in August of last year, he was born in Elmer and was the son of Greta Bell Carman of Hildreth Avenue and the late Roland G. Carman.

He was a field engineer with Atlantic Electric Co. in the Bridgeton office, retiring in 1981 after 40 years of service. Mr. Carman was a U. S. Marine Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a radio operator and gunner. He was a staff sergeant and served in the Pacific Theater.

The deceased was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he was a ruling elder and a member of the Session and a former member of the board of trustees. He also was a member at large of the Council Committee of the Southern New Jersey Council, Boy Scouts of America, the Quarter Century Club of Atlantic Electric Co., the Centerton Gold Club and former president of the B. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Marilyn) April of Carmel, and two grandchildren, Adam and Leah April.

Services will be held Saturday at 3 p. m. at the First Presbyterian Church, W. Commerce and Giles streets, with the Rev. Harry L. Holfelder, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be made in Overlook Cemetery. There will be no public viewing. The family suggests contributions in Mr. Carman's memory be made to the First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home.
