Miklos Barabas
Birth: Feb. 10, 1810, Romania
Death: Feb. 12, 1898
Budapest
Budapest Capital District, Hungary

Artist. Miklos was born in Kézdimárkosfalva, Mărcuşa in Romanian. Educated at the Protestant school of Nagyenyed. He painted from an early age and in 1829 he was a pupil of J. Ender in Vienna. His study tour in Italy during 1834-1835 proved to be highly fruitful. He took over the technique of painting water colour from W. L. Leitch, an English painter, as well as a novel portrayal of nature. Miklos was the first Hungarian painter who managed to live by means of art which was largely due to the fact that he was a master of portrait painting. As late as 1884 he painted a well-known portrait of the great Hungarian poet János Arany. Revolutionary Lajos Kossuth and poet/revolutionary Sándor Petofi are some of his famous subjects. He was elected a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences at the age of 26, and in 1862 he became president of the Hungarian Fine Art Association. He died in Budapest. (bio by: Shock)
