John Ernst Steiding was born in Barton, Allegany County, Maryland the first son and second child to John Bernhardt Lebrecht Steiding and Mariea Elizabeth Batree. His parents were born in Colba Goethe, Germany and both immigrated to the US in 1856 at age 25 years, where they first settled in Barton, Allegany County, Maryland. His parents later bought a big farm in Deer Park, Garrett County, Maryland, where they raised 10 children. John Ernst Steiding married 19 January 1888 to Elizabeth Jane (McLaughlin) Hartley. They lived in Ocean, outside Midland, Allegany County, Maryland before building the big "Steiding House" on Rail Road Street in Midland. They had one daughter Vera Ethel, who died a few months after birth on 13 August 1892 from cholera. They then had a son Earl Barnhardt Steiding born 21 Nov 1889 died 03 April 1957 in Midland at the family home. John Ernst was known to be working in construction and surely taught his son many of the skills that he had. John Ernst Steiding was the first Mayor of Midland serving 2 terms from 1902-1904, 1906-1907. John E. belonged to the Anchor Lodge,K. P. of Midland; George's Creek Valley Lodge, No 161, A. F. & M., at Lonaconing, and was advanced through the Chapter and Council of the Masonic Order.
The Methodist Episcopal Church held his membership. He was a Republican. John Ernst lived in Elk Garden during his early years and he also was elected Mayor there during his short tenure living there.
He met many of his Great Grandchildren, while he was living at the home in Midland. He was a big man physcially and also honored in Allegany County, Maryland as having contributed a lot to the area.
"Pa" as we called him was gentle, caring and was buried in Elk Garden at the R.D. Dean Memorial IOOF Cemetery, where his wife's brother in law, Richard Davis Dean started, owned and managed the cemetery for years in Mineral County, West Virginia. The funeral was held from The Steiding Home on Rail Road Street, Midland.
