Born July 9, 1892 in Los Fresnos, Texas. Her father was Plutarco Garcia (descended from the Balli family) and her mother was Adela Pizana de Garcia.
She married Oscar Vera from Santa Maria, Texas and they had twelve children, seven girls and five boys. Little Alfredito died as a toddler, and two additional children died in childbirth, Virginia 1, and Jesus 1.
She was widowed at age 45, mother of 11 children ranging in ages from 27 to 6 yrs old! After many were married and had moved on to raise their own families, four of her daughters remained: Virginia (2), Marina, Adela, and Alicia. The five women shared their home at 848 Palm Blvd for the next 44 years until her death in the summer of 1981.
Her grandchildren, calling her Manane or Manani (a corruption of Mama Grande), loved receiving cinnamon candy (bolitas) from her that she always had stashed in her dress pockets. We were amazed at her long "trensa" that she wound into a bun by day, and turned loose at night, and feared getting spanked with the "chancla" if we failed to close the door when we ran out to play in the yard. Her "jardin" had citrus and avocado trees, and aloe vera plants against the surrounding wall, all she treasured for their delicious taste, nutritive, and healing properties.
I remember her as a quiet woman with a calming presence, a sweet smile and laugh, and I miss her still.
