The Merritt's numbered twelve on their arrival in Iowa: seven in the John Merritt family, five in the Joseph Merritt family. Both families welcomed new additions shortly after settling in Rome township. On January 5, 1839, Joseph’s wife Sarah gave birth to their second daughter whom they named Rebecca Ann.
Local Jones County, Iowa history records show Rebecca Ann Merritt as the “first white woman” born in Rome township, Jones county, Iowa.
In the spring of 1853 Joseph’s first born “Iowa” daughter, fourteen year old Rebecca Ann, married her first cousin, Joseph, the son of John and Catherine Merritt. Marriage between blood related first cousins was frowned upon and Rebecca’s marriage to her first cousin Joseph may have caused conflict within the family of Joseph Merritt.
Rebecca Ann was only fourteen years old when they married. In the eighteen fifties this union produced three children: Wilson G. Merritt, born in January, 1855; William E. Merritt, born about 1858; and Sylvester J. Merritt, born about 1859. More would follow in the eighteen sixties and later.
