John Fleming Goddard was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company H (new), 1st (Butler's) KY Cavalry Regiment, CSA.

Mr. John F. Goddard was born
at the old Goddard homestead in
Elk Spring Valley Nov. 21, 1838,
and died at the home of his sister,
Mrs. T.J. Alexander in this city
last Sunday night at eleven

He was the son of
Sidney Goddard and Nellie Cullom,
a cousin of Senator Shelby
Cullom of Illinois. In Jan. 1876,
Mr. Goddard was married to Mrs.
Nellie Christian of Rankin, who
died in 1889, from this union six
children were born, three boys
and three girls, five of whom
are now living, being Mrs. Chas.
Hedrick, Miss Mary Goddard,
Joe and Thomas Goddard of this
city, Mr. Sidney Goddard of
Dallas, Tex. He is also survived
by two sisters and one brother.
Mesdames T.J. Alexander and
G.C. Vickery of this place and
George Goddard of Hillsboro,

Deceased had always been a
staunch Republican and was always
in politics, he served one term
as Assessor and two terms as Jailer,
and had as few enemies, as any one.
He had been practically an invalid
for the past several months.

His remains were interred in the Goddard
burying ground on the old homestead in
the Elk Spring Valley, the funeral
services were conducted by the Rev,
T.L. Hulse of the Methodist church.
