Charles E. McLean, Sheriff
October 31, 1888, Charles E. McLean married Margaret V. Lewis. In the fifteen years that
they were married - LIST CHILDREN 4 at time of his death
March 15, 1903, Charles E. McLean was elected as Mayor of Mobile, Alabama where he
remained until his untimely death on July 10, 1904. McLean faced strong opposition as his
opponents were the Honorable John Craft and Mayor Walter F. Walsh.
In the short time that McLean served as chief executive for the City of Mobile, he gained
the respect and friendship of all who came in contact with him. He was acknowledged as the
most popular man with all classes in the city. McLean made a point to know ever employee of
the city personally and whenever he met them he always had a kind greeting. He was known
through the city as being a fair and impartial man.

Charles E. McLean was born in Mobile, AL on March 12, 1864. He was the son of Lieutenant Edward R. and Sallie R. (Newberry) McLean. Lieutenant McLean served in Company
B, of the First Georgia Regiment and was killed near Marietta, Ga., in 1864, four months after his
son, Charles E. McLean was born. Mrs. Sallie R. (Newberry) McLean was the daughter of
Captain Charles Newberry, a steamboat captain and one of Mobile's early citizens. Mrs. Sallie R.
McLean died in 1891, leaving one son, Charles E. Mcl.ean.
Charles E. McLean attended public school of the city (Mobile) until 1879, when he began
a life for himself Charles first took up the trade of a ship carpenter and later went into the liquor
business, which he remained in until he was elected as Sheriff.
