Albert C. Spates Jr., formerly of Monument Beach, Bourne, died in Golden Living Wedgemere Nursing Home, in Taunton, Saturday morning, May 1, 2010. Born in Dennis, son of the late Albert and Georgia (Chase) Spates Sr., he was educated in Wareham schools. Albert previously lived in Brockton. He was a retired custodian for Bourne Town Hall. He retired after 28 years and he and his wife spent the majority of their retirement years involved with the Escape Retiree RV Club. He spent time as a volunteer in building the Co-Op Escape Retiree Camp Ground in Washula, Fla., and they spent time with the Escape Club in Summerdale, Ala., where they eventually built a permanent home. He was also a contract yacht captain, being one of the youngest to receive this Coast Guard license. He captained boats for the wealthy people in the Point Independence area of Onset. During World War II, he was employed by the U.S. Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Edes) Spates of Taunton; and his son, Gary Spates and his wife Cynthia of Raynham. He was the brother of Robert Spates of Monument Beach; and was an uncle to two nephews in Florida, Mark and William Spates. A private family funeral service will be held in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. (Rte. 138 South), Taunton, Wednesday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Agawam Cemetery, Wareham.
