Nebraska Governor. Educated at Iowa Wesleyan University, during the Civil War, he served in Company D, 8th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he moved to Osceola, Nebraska, where he worked as a farmer, rancher and banker. Entering politics, he served as the Polk County treasurer, (1870-80) and was a member of the Nebraska House of Representatives, (1881-82). In 1902, he was elected as a Republican the 14th Governor of Nebraska, serving until 1907. During his two terms, numerous pardons were granted, an improved state auditing system was initiated and a direct primary law was promoted. After leaving office he lived in retirement until his death.
