Lawyer; Civic Leader; Entrepreneur. Founded the oldest continually operating law firm in the United States: Bobo, Carlisle & Edwards, which operates today as the Bean Law Firm, Spartanburg, SC. Served on the first Board of Trustees of Wofford College 1851-1861, and again 1863-1885 (twice as chairman). Elected Dec. 6, 1860 as a delegate to the SC Secessation Convention. A signer of the South Carolina Declaration of Secession from the Union during the formation of the Confederate States of America. Served in the congress of South Carolina 1862-1864. Member of Central Methodist Church (first church in Spartanburg 1837) 1839-1885; Superintendent of Sunday School 1841-1880. Delegate to Methodist General Conference. Father-in-law of civic leader John W. Carlisle (1827-1914).
Married Nancy Holland Foster c.1833. She was the daughter of Anthony Foster, Jr. and Elizabeth Bobo of Cedar Springs, SC.
