Warren Gamaliel Harding
Birth: Nov. 2, 1865
Blooming Grove
Morrow County
Ohio, USA
Death: Aug. 2, 1923
San Francisco
San Francisco County
California, USA

29th United States President. Born in a small cottage in Blooming Grove, Ohio, the first of eight children, his father was a rural Ohio doctor. He attended public school in nearby Caledonia and earned a degree from Ohio Central College in Iberia. Harding also served as a printer's apprentice at the weekly Caledona Argus. The family moved to Marion and the future President obtain a position with the Marion Democratic Mirror eventually purchasing the paper becoming its editor and publisher. He married Florence Kling-DeWolfe, the divorced daughter of a wealthy father. Involvement in local Republican politics led to election to the state Senate, lieutenant governor. and the U.S. Senate. He won the Whitehouse by simply giving speeches from the front porch of his Marion home. The Harding administration accomplished very little in the form of achievements and produced mainly scandals. Historians regard Harding as the worst President in the nation's history whose leadership reduced the Presidency to a mere ceremonial entity. However, he had appointed a brilliant group of men to his cabinet in Charles Hughes, Herbert Hoover and Andrew Mellon. They carried the day with many achievements. The Hardings embarked on a 15,000 mile transcontinental train trip and voyage to Alaska. With known heart problems, he engaged in arduous political tasks giving many speeches enroute often in blistering heat and drove the golden spike to complete the Alaska Railroad. Food poisoning from tainted crab meat at Cordova, Alaska resulted in extreme discomfort. Upon arrival in San Francisco, he died peacefully while asleep at the age of 57. His controversial death spawned a conspiracy theory implicating his wife who was accused of his death by poisoning. She enhanced the charges by refusing to permit an autopsy or a death mask. His body was returned to Washington and placed in the Gold Room where a state funeral followed at the United states Capital Building. Thousands turned out to view the funeral train that carried the president's body from Washington, D.C., to Marion, Ohio where it was placed in a temporary tomb at Marion Cemetery. At the time of Mrs Harding's death, both bodies were moved to a newly constructed Memorial across the road from the cemetery. It was dedicated by then Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover and is located on a 10 acre site built through public donations. In the post-era of Warren G. Harding's death his spirit lived on in the form of paternal law suits against the Presidents estate by women claiming offspring fathered by the Ladies-man President. Graft Scandals were sorted out and dealt with before a horrified nation. The Harding House in Marion has been restored to its original appearance with original furnishings and the Press Building at the rear of the house, built in 1920 for reporters working during the front-porch campaign has been transformed into a museum. (bio by: Donald Greyfield (inactive))
