George Espy was the oldest child of Josiah and Elizabeth Patterson Espy. He learned the shoe making trade at an early age.
He enlisted in the Continental Army at age 16 from Northumberland County, for which he was granted a pension in 1832. After the Revolutionary War, George and his brother Thomas went to Fayette County.
In 1784, George married Polly, daughter of his uncle, Peter Patterson Jr., in Old Redstone Church. He settled in Espyville where he operated a saw mill, grist mill, and distillery near the 'Big Spring.' George and his wife were members of the Swedenborgian religious movement.
George was commissioned as captain in 1813 and marched to Fort Erie with his three sons, Patterson, Thomas Stevenson, and James, but this company was not mustered in for service.
George and Polly were the parents of the following nine (9) known children:
1-Nancy Espy (b.1785) married Anthony Bennett
2-Patterson Espy (b.1786) married Mercy Freeman
3-Josiah Espy (b.1788) married Susan Denny
4-Thomas Stevenson Epsy (1792-1813) died on the march to Lake Erie and was brought back to Espyville and buried on the home lot
5-Anna Espy (b.1794) married Josiah Espy Stevenson
6-Dr. George Richard Espy (Feb. 21, 1796-Feb. 23, 1849 Fort Madison, Iowa)
7-James Espy (b.1798) married Nancy Espy
8-John Espy (b.1800) married Margaret Free
9-Hugh McConnick Espy (1802-1859) married Leonora Murray; after her death married he Jane Green
9-David Espy (1804-1860) married Jane Murray
