Bessie Reynolds Brewster, a Birmingham, Alabama, victim of an April 27, 2011, tornado. Ms. Brewster lived in the Pratt City area.
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama --- Bessie Reynolds Brewster's life revolved around her family and her church.

In the last hour of her life, shortly before the tornado that would claim her destroyed parts of Tuscaloosa, the Pratt City widow was worried about the safety of her college-age granddaughter.

"She called me at 4:48 p.m. and asked me whether my daughter at the University of Alabama was OK. I told her she was," said Shelia Hurd, Brewster's daughter.

Ms. Brewster was a devoted daughter as well. A few hours before the tornado struck, Ms. Brewster, 72, had left her Hibernian Street home and headed to nearby Lafayette Street to check on her mother, Vicy Reynolds, 95. She then returned home and was there when the tornado struck.

Ms. Brewster was a retired nurse who was active at Mount Moriah Baptist Church in the North Pratt community of Birmingham. She loved Wednesday night Bible study, had taught Sunday school and joined the church's senior citizens group.

Each week she hosted Sunday dinner on Hibernian Street, with she and family members taking turns cooking.

Hurd said her mother will be remembered most for her kindness and helpfulness to others.

"She had a happy spirit about her," Hurd said.
