A native of Charter Oak, Iowa, he was born Feb. 4, 1914, to Asa Marshall and Nelle Robertson Jones.
He was raised and attended school at Charter Oak and received his bachelor's degree in speech and drama from Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa, in 1935.
In 1938, he received his master's degree from the University of Iowa and served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., attaining the rank of sergeant.
He taught at Mesa College at Grand Junction, Colo., from 1945 to 1946, when he moved to Pullman to begin his career at WSU.
Coralie Metcalf and he were married Sept. 13, 1947, at Santa Monica, Calif.
In 1955, he received his doctorate from Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., and was a professor of speech and drama at WSU until retiring in 1979.
They have made their home at Pullman since his retirement.
He was a member and former chairman of the Pullman Community Theatre and a member of the Simpson United Methodist Church at Pullman. He was also a member of the National Collegiate Players and of three scholastic honoraries, including Tau Kappa Epsilon, Theta Alpha Phi and Phi Sigma Iota.
Survivors include his wife of Pullman; two daughters, Jaclyn Kell of Pullman and Pamela Boyd of Buckfield, Maine; a brother, Marshall Jones of Miami, and four grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the Pullman Community Theatre, in care of Ruth Vanderwall, S.E. 510 Water St., Pullman, Wash. 99163.
