Christened 16 May 1796, Much Dewchurch Parish, Hereford, England Samuel, at the age of three, was placed in the home of uncle Samuel Watkins, a stonemason, who lived in Orcop, Hereford, England. Under his uncle's guidance, Samuel learned the trade of mason. Several of the houses he built there still stand.
Samuel, Nancy, and some of their children were converted to the Church in about 1840, and they opened their home to the missionaries to hold meetings. Their desire was to immigrate to America but Nancy died before they were able to leave.
Samuel, by careful saving, was able to periodically send some of his adult children to America. He also donated to help others. Finally, in 1868 after 30 years of waiting, he left England with his son and their family. They rode the train to Wyoming, where they joined a company and completed their journey. Less than two months after his life-long dream was fulfilled, Samuel died at the age of 78.
